I really can’t stand people who are selfish, rude and unkind! From my kids to a stranger, when I see them acting this way, it winds me up and makes me think some very not Christ-like thoughts. I’m not saying this as some weird boast; I simply want to be honest and open with you. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who responds this way, and I’m confident some of you can relate. The problem with this kind of attitude towards others is that it feeds itself. Once I’ve let myself get wound up by a selfish, rude or unkind person, I can quite easily open up the circle of offence and start bringing others with me on this journey of hurt and resentment. It’s like an ‘attitude black hole’ that tries to suck in all those around me, so they, too, develop a sense of injustice and annoyance.
I’m sure you’ll agree that this situation isn’t good for anyone’s mental well-being.
The best thing I can do is to forgive them for their indiscretion. Maybe there are circumstances I’m unaware of that have caused them to act this way. But even if there weren’t, my attitude should not depend on the actions of others. It’s said that letting go of grudges and bitterness can make way for improved health and peace of mind. And who wouldn’t want this?
I’m a work in progress, and I believe that daily, as I deepen my walk with Jesus, He helps soften me in areas where I was once hard-hearted. Long may this continue.
What about you? What do you see in yourself with which you need help?
