There’s a moment described to us in the Gospels, John chapter 13, verse 5, where: [Jesus] poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
Why did Jesus do this? Let me suggest two reasons. Number one: The roads around Israel weren’t the best. Dusty and muddy roads + sandals made for pretty filthy feet, and you couldn’t eat together with feet like that – not the done thing at all!
And reason number two: Jesus was demonstrating that He had come not as a conqueror but as a Servant. It says in Matthew chapter 20, verse 28 that He came “not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Washing feet then, a foreshadowing of His ultimate act of humility and love on the Cross.
Where are you washing the feet of others? In other words, where and to whom are you showing the same humility and love that Christ shows us?
