Advent, Day 19 – Tomb

(Joseph of Arimathea) approached Pilate and asked to have custody of the body of Jesus. So Pilate consented and ordered that the body be given to him. Then Joseph wrapped the body in a shroud of fine linen and placed it in his own unused tomb, which had only recently been cut into the rock. They rolled a large stone to seal the entrance of the tomb and left. (Matthew 27:58-60)

Joseph of Arimathea was, according to all four Gospels, the man who assumed responsibility for the burial of Jesus after His crucifixion. It is said in Scripture that Joseph was a secret disciple, one that, whilst seeking, kept his faith in Jesus quiet and personal.

There must have been a point in the process of Christ’s crucifixion when Joseph decided that enough was enough. He would put his faith in Jesus on public display by taking down the Messiah’s body and placing it with honour in his owned reserved grave.

This Christmas, if you’re a Christian, choose not to be silent. Of all the times of the year in which we have an opportunity to declare our faith and our love of Jesus, Christmas is the big one. Invite someone to church this Christmas, whether online or in-person. Be bold and step out in faith. Doing so may change someone’s life forever.
